Remark on Fever Mortality in Deobund in 1884

During the autumn of 1884 a large portion of Northern India was visited by one of those violent outbreaks of fever, which occur from time to time at intervals by no means regular,* and during and after which the mortality! is so great as to be remarkable, even in parts which are notoriously fever-stricken. Lying well within the affected area the district of Saharanpur suffered severely as a whole, not only in the numbers attacked, for but few escaped, but in the mortality which reached the high rate of 57 per mille. (Fever 48 per mille). The total deaths during the year haviu<r amounted to 56,001 (Fever 47,295). The distribution of the epidemic and the mortality was very unequal, some town and rural circles having suffered out of all proportion to others. Thus in the town and large villages the fever mortality varied from 40'05 per mille in Rurki, to 123'27 per mille in Deobund, and 93-15 per mille in Nanoutah, whilst in the rural circles it ranged from 24*1 per mille in Jowalapore to 69'9 per mille iu Deobuud, and 73'3 in Nanoutah. Taken generally, the northern and eastern parts were visited much less severely than the southern and western ; and whilst the northern sub-montane tracts escaped almost eu-
